Replace rear brake pads on a 2015–2019 Ford Transit
A straightforward driveway job with basic tools. Plan an hour per axle and replace the pads on both sides.
Applies to: 2015–2019 Ford Transit 150 / 250 / 350
Difficulty
Time
45–90 min
Tools
Floor jack & jack stands, Lug wrench, 13 mm & 15 mm sockets, Caliper piston tool or C-clamp, Brake cleaner, Torque wrench
Symptoms
- Squealing from the rear when braking
- Grinding metal-on-metal noise
- Brake wear warning on the dash
Check these first
The cheapest repair is the one that doesn't need a part.
- Measure rotor thickness — replace rotors if under the minimum stamped on the hat.
- Check for leaking caliper seals or a stuck slide pin.
Step by step
- 1
Lift and secure
Loosen lugs, raise the rear axle and support it on stands. Never work under a van on a jack alone.
- 2
Remove the caliper
Remove the two guide pin bolts and hang the caliper from the spring with a wire — don't let it hang by the hose.
- 3
Replace pads and clips
Remove the old pads and abutment clips. Clean the bracket, install new clips and pads.
- 4
Compress and reinstall
Compress the piston, reinstall the caliper and torque the guide bolts to spec.
- 5
Bed in
Pump the pedal until firm. Make 8–10 moderate stops from 30 mph to bed in the pads.
Questions
- Do I need to replace rotors with pads?
- Only if the rotors are below minimum thickness, deeply scored or cause pedal pulsation.
