Front-load washer not draining or grinding
Most drain problems are a clogged pump filter. When the filter is clear but water stays in the drum or the pump grinds, replace the drain pump.
Applies to: Samsung, Whirlpool and Maytag front-load washers
Difficulty
Time
30–60 min
Tools
Phillips screwdriver, Nut drivers, Pliers, Towels & shallow pan
Symptoms
- Washer will not drain
- Grinding or rattling during drain
- Clothes soaking wet after spin
- Error 5C / 5E / nd (Samsung), F21 (Whirlpool)
Check these first
The cheapest repair is the one that doesn't need a part.
- Drain and clean the pump filter behind the lower access panel.
- Check the drain hose for kinks and blockages.
- Look for socks or coins inside the pump inlet.
Step by step
- 1
Unplug and drain
Unplug the washer. Open the pump access door and drain the remaining water through the emergency hose.
- 2
Access the pump
Remove the lower front panel (Samsung) or tip the washer back (some Whirlpool models).
- 3
Swap the pump
Disconnect the wiring and hose clamps, unbolt the pump and install the new one in reverse order.
- 4
Test
Run a drain/spin cycle and check for leaks around the clamps.
Questions
- Why is my washer pump grinding?
- Grinding usually means debris in the impeller or failed motor bearings. Clean the filter; if grinding continues, replace the pump.
